Synopsis

On board the "Spaceship of the Imagination", the journey starts along quasars, exploding galaxies, star clusters, supernovas and pulsars. After returning to our own solar system, the Alexandria Library is visited, the seat of all knowledge on Earth 2,000 years ago.

Plot

The program opens with the host, Carl Sagan, taking viewers on a poetic journey as he describes the cosmos in his "Spaceship of the Imagination". The spaceship located galaxy’s away travels to the Local Group, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way, the Orion Nebula, our Solar System, and finally the planet Earth. While this journey is taking place Carl explains the many celestial phenomena seen along the way. About midway through the trip, Carl starts to explain how Eratosthenes successfully calculated the circumference of the Earth in 300 BC, which then leads to a description of the lost Great Library of Alexandria. Finally, Carl describes the "Ages of Science" before pulling back to the full span of the Cosmic Calendar.
